WordPress Training Durham

I’m delighted to be yet again making use of the superb facilities of The Office Company in Framwellgate Moor Durham for my next WordPress training date on 31st January 2012.

The Venue

First of all why have I chosen this venue? Well, apart from the fact that The Office Company are fantastic people to deal with the facility is brand spanking new accommodation with reliable WiFi and an ultra modern monitor to display the online teaching material. The fact that it’s in a good central location with ample free parking also helps make life easier for the delegates.

So, what about the training? The course material is designed to enable someone with no prior experience to understand the process by registering a domain name, arranging web site hosting and installingWordPress on their hosting space. Time is taken to make sure that each delegate is up to speed and understands each stage of the learning. And, although this is a beginner’s course there’s also a lot of great stuff aimed to fast track people who have used WordPress previouslywithout ever understanding it fully. One of the most enjoyable aspects from my perspective as the course leader are the frequent comments of  ‘Well, I never knew you could do that!’ or even ‘Wow! It’s that easy?’

WordPress Training – Two Sessions

The full day of training covers many WordPress topics (ALL of the important one’s) but can broadly be split into two halves. Surprise, surprise morning and afternoon!

The morning session deals with the installation of the core WordPress software including as mentioned earlier domain name and hosting setup. The actual installation of WordPress is greatly simplified and made accessible to many more people courtesy of the now almost universal ‘One Click Install’ which most web hosting companies now offer. This clever bit of kit handles all of the technical stuff meaning you need never get involved with creating the necessary database or uploading files using FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

Setting up a New Theme

A large part of the afternoon session deals with installing and setting up a new theme. The default 2010 and 2012 themes are beautiful in their simplicity and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t go ahead and customise one of these and use it to publish your content – many people do just that with great success. However, by doing so you haven’t even scratched the surface of what’s possible with WordPress. There are very many free and commercial (paid for) themes available that extend the possibilities of design and functionality of this great system.

Our training includes the installation of a commercial theme with a built in home page image slider to quickly and easily bring your website to life and make it your own. Changing from one of the default themes to a commercial theme is an aspect that we spend quite a bit of time on, we explore the possibilities that open out to you by fully capitalising on the features of the theme and its associated widgets. (Don’t know what a widget is? I’ll show you!)

Also in the afternoon session, we explore the functionality you can bring to your website with WordPress plugins. Whatever you would like to achieve from your website there’s a good chance that a plugin exists to help you do it, and similar to the Open Source ethos surrounding WordPress most of them are free for you to access. We look at a few of the most popular, well tried and tested plugins demonstrating how to find, evaluate and install them in minutes.

Search Engine Optimisation

Which brings us round to SEO. Search Engine Optimisation of your website in the vast majority of cases is crucial; you’ll not be surprised to hear that this is yet another area that WordPress excels. Out of the box WordPress is search engine friendly, combine that with some straightforward ‘best practice’ tips and an amazing SEO plugin and you’re well on your way to attracting visitors with an interest in what you do and offer.

Can Do Will Do

To be effective it must be said, training of any kind relies on practice and a ‘can do will do’ attitude. Our Learn WordPress in a Day’ course will arm you with the knowledge you want to empower you to strike out on your own and take control of your website, your ultimate success will depend on you making use of the opportunity. To facilitate your success we provide you with your own WordPress installation on our portal to build and learn on the day, to truly enforce your learning you will have access to your training site on which to work for a month after your attendance. If you make use of this facility it will arm you with the skills to confidently take the next step towards your first (Probably of many!) WordPress website.
